Why Oak Flooring?
The beauty of a Solid Oak Floor, or even an Engineered Oak Floor, lies not just in its durability. Oak is a very tactile material and as a flooring in both warm under foot and aesthetically attractive. For years Oak flooring has been the flooring of choice for those properties where Pine Flooring was not appropriate but a wooden floor was either needed or desired.
Within the UK, recent years have seen the demand for Oak Flooring grow significantly. Much of this demand has been met by flooring made from European Oak. While Upton Original Wood Flooring is pleased to offer both Solid and Engineered Oak Flooring made from European Oak, we are especially pleased to offer English Oak with FSC certification. English Oak has always played a special part in the UK's economy and has been used for many diverse constructions, from Buildings to Galleons. With FSC certification comes the knowledge that the woodlands are managed in accordance with the Forestry Stewardship Council's guidelines ensuring sustainability and ecological govenance.
With modern house construction techniques usually leading to a concrete subfloor, adhesive technology has advanced to meet the increasing demand for gluing wooden flooring to concrete. While there are constraints to this, principally the width of the board, Oak flooring is frequently being bonded down and where wider width boards are required, Engineered Oak Flooring is being used. Why Engineered Oak? Largely because it is dimensionally more stable than Solid Oak Flooring and is therefore the most suitable wooden foor for underfloor heating. Simply put, Engineered Oak is a thin Oak floorboard bonded to a dimensionally stable man-made base. In choosing which Engineered floor to select it is important to identify the quality of the man-made base and to determine the thickness of the top surface (often called the "wear layer"). A 6mm wear layer is sufficient to last for four or five sandings and place the flooring at the quality end of the spectrum.
